Hello, wondering if anyone can help me. I have owned my MK3 golf GTI 8v 1998 for 7 years and it has been a fantastic car. Last November i had a problem where it would lose power at speed, the oil light would come on and the rev's would drop. It would show no faults on the Dianostics, anyway had the speed sensor replaced (crank shaft sensor) and it was fine for 2 months. Now got same problem but the revs drop at speed and not at speed. Took it back to garage and it show speed sensor fault, so had another one fitted....and yes a week later it has started doing it again. Going back to garage today...any ideas????

you say the revs drop is that when you are driving normally as well as whilst slowing down. does the engine cut out at all?

quite common for mk3 golfs to need to have the throttle body cleaned as this can cause similar symptons and wont show up on VAGCOM

Yes, the engine cuts out, it won't start straight away so i leave it 5 mins and it starts again. I am in the process of selling the car as well! so need to get this fixed.

I so relate to your problem!

Had a similar one on my 97 8v 2.0 golf, which was fixed by replace the ecu relay (number 30).

My wife's 00 8v 3.0 golf cabrio is now suffering from just the same problem, speciallising in cutting out whilst in the outside lane of the M4, replace the relay, problem still there.... Speed sendor is next on the list.

This engine seems to be renowned for this problem, there just does not seem to be an easy fix, rather an expensive list of diagnosis by replacement.

Good luck, perhaps you could share the cure when you find it.

Hello, Yes of course if i find the cure i will post it straight away. Took it back to the garage but they could not find anything wrong and basically said 'good luck' to me! My Cousin is a mechanic and is going to take it off my hands for a month or so and see if he can solve it! I am lucky enough to have access to another car.
