when i put my window up it goes half way up and then returns back down manually and on auto close.
The only way to close it is to do it up untill its just about to come back down and then tap it and continue doing it up.
It could be something to do with the clifford alarm alough i dont think so because it goes up ok when i lock the car when the window is open.

Im thinking it could be the switch

please let me know if you have ever had and solved this problem.

Thanks

Sound like the cables are frayed, it gives a resistance to the motor similar to a hand or a childs head !! The motor winds down.
Replace the cables, this cones as part of the door card/seal not expensive.

you are on the right lines re the object in the way/safety mechanism, but it's not the cables. It's a well known fault with the plastic clips that hold the window in place. One or both has most likely broken, and is stopping both sides of the window from rising together.

This means that there is more resistance than there should be because one side is stuck (not moving much) and the window winds down.

check www.uk-mkivs.net for a thread with a guid on how to fix it for less than £20. Or you can take it to VW for £350.

thanks for the advice guys, i should have mentioned that the car is a convertable, hence the doors have no frame, refering to this common clip problem i cant find it on the link that Andy recomends, can anyone send me a link to the specific page please, and are these clips within the door or is it a different set up un the convertable

Hi Pete,

I found this link through the search function on mkiv's.

It's not for a convertable, but the door/window structure should be similar. The door card should come off pretty easy, and that will give you an idea as to whether it is worth attempting.

Cheers,
Andy
