Many thanks.

Good news.

One more question (that I should have covered in the first place...); are the paddles fixed to the steering column (so don't move round with the wheel) or to the back of the wheel (so do move round). The reason I ask is because it would seem better to me if they were fixed so at least you knew which paddle to use no matter what position the wheel was in.

Hope that makes sense, any ownership experience comments? I really like the sound of the DSG 'box.

The buttons will change the volume on the stereo amoungst other stuff, the paddles on the back will change the gears ;-)

But remember if you don't like the paddles you can still use the tiptronic on the gearstick to nudge the gears up and down.

By the way if it's the 1st time you've tried DSG make sure you get plranty of time to ge used to it as it can be a bit strange to begin with and you need to change driving style to get the best out of it.

I've asked for a good hour in each car, will give Mrs R chance to have a try too then.

What's the thoughts on long term reliability on the DSG though? Are the older ones showing any issues?

Bodes well then.

I want to get ideas of costs for new and approx 12 month old cars and didnt want to have problems crop up once the warranty goes!

Remember

The early GTI DSG's didnt have paddles they were an option, so if you are buying a 2004/2005 model, you will need to ask to confirm

Very true, my 55 plate GTI had the gear stick but no paddles, i didnt realize when i bought (knew nothing about VW's back then.)

I sold it and got back into manual, and now miss DSG.

Well I finally got to try one today... I loved it!

Drove a 5 door DSG with the paddles and I couldn't believe how quickly and smoothly it changed gear. Changing from 2nd to 3rd when giving it some beans was just too addictive.

Im a bit undecided over what colour to go for though. My first though is the Candy white, I just love the look of them. BUT, Im trying to think practically and with the inevitable children on the way in the next few years I really should go for a 5-door. This is my sticking point. Im not so sure on how good they look in the white/5door combo?
Also, is it going to cripple me come resale time in 3 years when the fashion for white may have passed?
If the white gets ruled out then I think it may be a red one (and get the wheels done in anthracite) blue is too boring, black Id be forever cleaning and silver is just too common.

Any thoughts on colours and potential impact on resale?

I too test drove a GTi 5-door manual and DSG back to back yesterday at my local dealership. I was apprehensive of the DSG at first and was convinced that manual was for me, but found the gear change with the paddles to be super smooth and fast. I'm now looking for a DSG car to buy :-)

One question I do have thou, is it possible to get the paddles fitted to an earlier car that was supplied without the paddles? Many adverts I look at make no mention of the paddles, just referencing the DSG. If it can be done how much is it to do?

Regards

Mark.

There are a fair few cars on the used VW site equipped with paddles if you look. I had intended to drive both the DSG and a manual but after taking out the DSG first I decided not to bother with the manual at all.

I'm not too sure on the grey, it looks good as does the silver but IMO they are just too common a choice now. Im still leaning towards white or red.
Mark, what are your thoughts on colour?
