Am weighing up the purchase of a new GTI (or edition 30). I've never bought a new VW before, but know that the dealers don't normally give too much away in terms of discount.

I had a quick chat with a salesman (didn't have time to sit down and go through the whole process) and he said that demanding March targets mean there may be flexibility, even on GTI's. At this stage, I think a cash purchase would suit me better, so finance deals not really relevant. So, my question is, what sort of discount have others managed to get on new GTI's? Is 10% too optimistic?

Also, are the edition 30's likely to hold their value slightly better? - the Mk4 anniversary certainly has.

I'd go for a GTi Edition 30 - the extras make all the difference. That said, there may be better deals to be had on the standard GTi?

Am more than happy to be challenged on this but I think cash purchases tend to get smaller discounts...You'll tend to get a bigger discount if you take a finance product, as the commission earned on the finance product will help to offset the discount on the car.

But otherwise in principle, you're right - if you can find a dealer who is still a few units off hitting their quarter 1 target, they may be inclined to give you a good offer, rather than missing their target (and hence losing bonus) or having to self-register cars...

At the end of the day, remember that you have the upper hand in the negotiation - you have the money they want, and can always walk away and come back later or try another dealer.

Good luck!

The GTI's will have a discount as they have stopped production so are selling what is left.
They come with free leather upgrade and armrest, i read this in a car mag

The Edition 30 is better but might not have as good discount but they are stopping production soon as well as the mk 6 is due

I very much doubt they are stopping production just yet!

Would it not be cheaper sourcing from outside the dealer network?

I got mine from www.euroimports.co.uk - great service and value. Only difference is a 2yr rather than 3yr warranty but you can buy an extra year when/if you want to.

Sounds like the excrement of a male cow to me.

VW are hardly going to want prospective GTI customers buying Astras or Foci for 12 months until the MKVI GTI appears. I suspect your mate is full of the above named substance or is in fact just confused. More likely is the ED30 is stopping production and the standard GTI continuing. THe GTI's tend to be the last cars to be pulled from production as they like to chuck all the extras left over in stock on them and sell them as run out models.

10% maybe possible, although sounds a tad unrealistic.

I just picked one up having ordered in Jan, and with our fleet disc %, didn't really come close to that.

Then again depends on what each individual dealer has in the pipline and/or access to other stock if you want to make do with a car you haven't personally specced, but ticks most of the boxes.

There were a couple of black Ed30's in the ads on here with the anthracite wheels that looked pretty good.

Back in Dec 2007 I got a 10% discount on the car (GTi no Ed30) and optional extras (obviously had to pay full price for road tax, delivery etc).

I went through Orange Wheels who basically did very little than secure the price and put me in contact with a dealer. From then on I have dealt directly with the dealer in exactly the same way I would if i had gone in he showroom and ordered direct. It does mean that you could end up with a dealer at the other end of the country but mine was only 30 miles away. On Saturday I will be making the 30 mile trip to pick it up!!

Not been funny but im sure someone who works in a VAG garage knows what he is talking about.
As i said the standard GTi has already stopped production with the last ones getting free leather and armrest upgrades and the ED30 stops in Aug
Also the mk 6 gti wont be out probably till 2011. The first standard mk 6's are out next year. So you are saying they will be selling the mk v gti till 2011? I dont think so when the mk 5 stops end of the year/early next

I also have an article the the auto express magazine which i will check later.

I suppose the magazine is talking rubbish as well?

I doubt VW have stopped production, the leather is a UK only spec, not VW in europe or USA, so it's designed to improve the spec at the same price rather than drop the price.
Auto express have been proved to be wrong on many many occasions, I'm still waiting for the rs3 that was promised as immminent 2-3 years ago.

Thanks for the replies so far - interestingly I asked about production etc in the dealer. He said that the ED30 was limited to 1500 cars, so the normal GTI would carry on till the end.

I wasn't convinced though, as I too had read the opposite..... Anyway, back to my original point.

It seems that several online sites claim to get a UK car for around £1500 to £2000 below list price. Looks like thats what I'll aim for when I see the dealer again tomorrow.

ed30 is not limited to 1500 cars, the very fact you can still order one after the initial 1500 shows it's been extended, other foums have a big debate over vw's definition of limited to 1500 now it's back in production.

Sorry and your telling me VW are going to be without a flagship Golf in the hot hatch market for nearly 3 years? As if fella! If you want proof just ring your local dealer and ask if you are able to spec a car from the factory and wait to be greated with a yes, even an ED30 if that dealer still has an allocation.

I didn't sign up on here to argue but frankly your mate is wrong. Unlikley a skoda dealer is going to be informed of these things before a VW one. As for Auto Express they're always making stuff up, the car industry thrives on rumour and nonsense.

TTFN,

Nick

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, alot of times people will dis agree and have banters, thats what a forum is for as well as information sharing and tips.

Ok then i wll ring up VW at the end of the year when the stock runs out and see if i can order a new golf gti mk 5. When i said stop production i mean stop making them in the factory. Now of course their will be enough stock to see them through to about the end of this year but when the mk 6 is out you will not be able to order 1 unless its a demo that is already at the showroom.

Also the mk6 GTI will not be out till at least 2011 unless you are telling me it will be coming in 2009 when the mk 6 appears

That's a good price (£2168 discount) there was no discount to be had on drivethdeal when I got a GTi last August. Plus dealers were quoting 16 weeks delivery!
I got an EU import 5-dr metallic for £18200. 1 week delivery.

Have been reading an article on UK-MKIVS about the ED 30 not being limited to 1500 units - it is now "mainstream" so not sure how this affects the value
