The power steering is electric on these, I had some random electrical 'gremlins' on my A3 in the past mainly involving the warning lights (most of them including steering) and DSG not selecting properly (twice - but dealer could not locate any faults) on all occasions stopping and restarting the engine has cured the problem (reboot?) anyway my battery failed around 2 years ago and since replacing it have had no more problems so I'm thinking that the problems may have been a bad battery - low power at startup? (my problems always happened at/directly after startup).

Not sure if this is any help to you.......

also check your fluid is topped up or even change it completely as it may have gone thick/brownblack

Sounds like a broken wire or faulty sensor. Unfortunatly there's nothing you can do without the diagnostic equipment.

If it was mine and had the same problems i would hot foot it to the dealer asap, on a critical system such as the steering, you dont want any gremlins at 70mph on the motorway, like turning left and the car goes right.

I wouldnt even contemplate asking on here, youre asking complete strangers questions they dont know the answers to.

to be honest, like the last time when my MAF sensor went on the car, Audi diagnosed something completely different at fault with the car (which they later confirmed was working fine) it was only on MY persistance that they unplugged the MAF and found out that this sensor was the problem. This was as it was plugged up to a VAGCOM machine. i thought it was a MAF sensor problem by asking other people on forums about symptoms at fault on their cars similar to mine - hence i have some sort of faith of forums - and this also saved me ££ by not having said fault fixed only to find out this didnt sort out the problem i took it in for

the steering has never stopped working whilst driving the car, only on start up.

the battery seems fine as well, checked by some guy in Half's - thanks for the suggestions though
But a MAF sensor doesnt help you turn corners at speed.

If you asked on forums then thought it was the MAF sensor, why did you then take it to Audi for them to diagnose something else?

This sensor has been known to fail on VAG's electric power steering system. The symptom is the power steering turning switching itself on and off at random. As you can imagine, this is pretty serious if it happens when you're driving.

Don't know how much it is to fix. I assume it's on the steering column somewhere. You'll need a dealer to reset the codes anyway...

Sorry to bring up an old forum but this is exactly the same as my fault. Did you solve it in the end? What was it? Thanks
