I have recently bought a 3.0 Tdi A4 Avant Auto, I totally love the way it looks, handles, drives etc except for one or two things.

It might just be me seeing as this is the first auto car I have ever owned, but more often than not it appears that the auto box gets confussed when you accelerate hard and can't decide weather to drop one or two gears, this results in a fairly substantial delay similar to the massive lag of early turbo cars.

The other dissapointment is the mpg. Even sat on a motorway for an hour in 6th doing 70 - 80 it won't return more than 32mpg, my old 330d would do 45. I realise that the auto box and 4wd both work against mpg but I really didn't expect such a difference especially when sat on a motorway.

Are both of the above normal ? your comments would be appreciated

Same engine in my old A6 and now my A8L and I get 41 - 42 on the motorway. Have averaged 36.7 for 10k miles since I got it. Is your A4 new or has it got miles on already? Should get more mpg than that bearing in mind you have a lighter car.

Sometimes the autobox can be a bit hesitant but it is not something I have really noticed. The A6 was chipped and the 'box was better on that than the A8.

Can't say I've heard any complaints with that engine/box combination before - have you asked your dealer to take a look at it?

Has it been serviced yet? Filters may be blocked. Mpg improved after the first 10 -12k miles anyway but yours seems excessively high.

They serviced it before I took delivery so there shouldn't be any issues with blocked filters,at least you'd hope not, but thanks for the advise, I'll ring them and book it in

we have just changed our 2.5Tdi avant A4 for a 3.0auto, and consumption has gone down from 35mpg in the old one - we are now averaging about 40 with the 3.0. (Both figures according to DIS).
Best we have had being careful is 47mpg, car has now just done 3k miles.

I have exactly the same car and have never noticed the problem you mention.

The gear box sometimes gets confused when you have been driving in a sporty manner than then just pootle along, but never noticed any other foibles.

MPG wise I tend to get 38-40mpg on average. Drove from weymouth to Winchester yesterday, making progress and still managed 38.2mpg (according to the on board computer.)

Sounds like your may have a problem.
