I am thinking of ordering a new Golf, do I get the GTI or the R32. Is there a big difference in the performance and fuel consumption between the two? Is the R32 worth the extra? Which will will retain its value best?

This is a question that has been asked a lot, at least once a week and it really all comes down to 2 thinngs, what you want out of the car and how deep your wpockets are.

If you are looking for a high speed cruiser with a lovely V6 soundtrak and don't care about fuel consumption then the R32 is your car. I've got a R32 and average consumption is around 28and it can easily be less than 20 about town. You also have to remember the R32 falls into a high road tax bracket but thats realy irrelevent compared to the fuel consumption.

The GTI is just as fast especially the ED30 and can asily be tuned to 300bhp if that's your thing. Fuel consumtion is better, prably around 35mpg and it's a more involving driveespecially down an A-road although a R32 will have it in teh wet.

As I say I have a R32 and love it but if I was to make the decision now I would buy either one of the last ED30 cars or one of the new Pirelli edition cars.

By the way DSG is brilliant but make sure you have a long test drive with it as you need to change your driving style to get the best out of it. Coupled to the smooth V6 on the R32 it's sublime

I have had a GTi for 2 years, and started to get itchy feet, but didnt want to get out of a golf, so thought i would look at the R32, after 5 minutes in a test drive 30 minutes later i was signing the finance forms,

The R32 is a great car, definalty can put a smile on your face, the gti is a little too sensible.

If you dont want to draw attention then the GTI is the one. The R32 is quite loud even on the standard exhust.

The Pirelli Edition is basically the same spec. as the Edition30 apart from special wheels and a very strange tread pattern design upholstery. Orders being taken now for June delivery.

It's VW trying to cash in "nostalgia" and harking back to the MK1 Campaign model which is now a classic. I doubt that the current edition will be a classic in 25 years

If you go over to tyremoke.net you'll find more info. on GTIs and R32s.

Here is some details on the Pirelli Edition

I dont like the wheels on the pirelli model they look 'aftermarket', the tyre design on the seats is different not sure whether i like it or not.

Totally agree. Pedestrians always think you are going faster than you are! Very aggressive exhaust note - LOVELY! DO remember to lower the driver’s window to hear it!
