Hello fellow PHers,
My first thread and one of the main reasons im on here, im looking for a audi s3 replica.
You'r probably thinking why not buy a proper S3 well basically..insurance.. cant afford one smile!
... so the next best thing is a replica..might not go like one...but itl still make me wet myself when i see it lol

Any one got any tips on buying one or what to look out for?
any help will be appreciated...cheers

Do you mean an 8p (new) or 8l shape S3? I think it's a crap idea myself if it's an 8l S3 it'll be a lot of work to make it look like an S3, I guess you could just get the bumpers and not the wide arches however then it still won't look like an S3 IMO.

What car are you looking at to make into an S3, because I'd bet if you shop around the insurance isn't too bad.

the FWD badged as quattro thing does my nut in... instantly obvious.
I can understand insurance being hellish if you are young, my 18 year old brother paid nearly £2k in insurance for his 1.8 sport A3 a few years ago.

i know what you mean with insurance, i recently payed 1600 for a 1.6 renault megane..whats going on??!!

soo il be looking around the 1.6 petrol or 1.9tdi(diesel) so i can afford some petrol on top of the insurance lol.

Angrys3, i dont think you see my point in a s3 replica, they are absoulutely stunning cars and i would do anything to own one but i am only 18 so 200bhp+ cars are put out of the question so do u blame me for wanting one?? Atleast im not buying poopy 1.2 saxos and pretending it to a vtr or a vts ey?

I tend to agree that you shouldn't try to pretend a car is something it isn't...if you can't afford a proper S3 then just buy a normal A3...they're still good cars.

Don't forget...it's know what you drive...it's how you drive it wink

I think you have been a little hard on the lad. 18 years old and aspires to an S3 but because of insurance and other considerations can't afford one. As he says at least he is not interested in being a Saxo Barry Boy!

He could shop around for cheaper insurance for a 200 bhp car but that in itself may not be the wisest thing given his age.

We should be encouraging him to continue his interest in the Audi marque and not put him off. Hell if he is going to get lambasted on PH for this I am sure there are other forums who would offer help and advice.

Cheers Dilligaf, im glad you can see where im coming from. The S3 is such a sexy car, the arches, the bumpers the rims..and not forgetting that deep burbly noise from the tailpipes when it pulls away...phwar what a car!!

Im not looking for a car thatl rip my face of with speed yet, but one that pulls my pants down with looks, if u get me lol... And as you said im young so im keeping my fast driving for the weekend when i rally with my father, safest place to go fast... helmet and roll cage if something goes wrong. biggrin

..So i take it all you guys are against the idea?? so no advise??
Cheers anyways.

Hi Danny, Welcome to PH!
There are a couple of A3 S3 replicas in the classified section so have a look there.

But why not get something smaller and legit' like an original mini or a 106 Rallye, for a couple of years? Then when you got a bit of no claims behind you get a proper S3, it'll be worth the wait wink

Good morning young fella you should be able to find some reps if you look hard enough but a word of warning, Insurance may well still be an issue even if it is a replica, having worked in the industry companies do not give great rates on people imitating the flagship model without the performance as it makes it more attractive to thieves etc.

Just phone round first and be honest about what you are doing as come the day of an accident god forbid, the assessor will be ripping shreds out of you because you had been selective with the truth, i.e. you can't just say it has alloys you need to state it has S3 alloys bumpers etc rather than just stating it has been modified.

I hope this makes sense and does not scupper your idea entirely !

It is possible to do the conversion but it would cost you an arm and a leg, from those i've seen they can be quite hit and miss imo. (I took the easy way out and just bought a S3)

A few of the A3 guys on audi-sport.net have done similar things to their A3's so that might be a good place to have a look for ideas.

Good luck with it

hey and thanks for the welcome here,
a couple of you mentioned insurance and ive been pricing around and it isnt to bad, bit pricey but itl be worth it...well im hoping so!

I could go for something like a 106 ralye or something small like a saxo, but il put it in bluntly....i hate them! They give out one image and one image only...boy racer/chav and as road cars they dont work for me, to small, and not very safe if you get by something bigger.

My rally car is a 205 gti 1.9, highly tuned little car for its class and basically thats my bit of fun so i need something with a bit class but has a bit of road presence and i thought a S3 rep would of been a nice bit of kit.

Anyideas on some other cars out there?? like the a3, golf mk4 you can kinda see what im aiming forsmile

Depends on budget, what about a smallish engined 3 series, say 320 or similar, RWD & German quality? could still have some fun in a 1.8sport A3 with a re-map mind if you want Audi but without insurance of an S3!!

Or better still, get an S2 coupe fairly cheap, still got 230BHP standard, bit of haggling on insurance....bang, you're away!! and car will hold its money as a bit of a classic now..

Have a look at audi-sport.net, there's a fairly busy A3/S3 forum there which will be of much more use.

Just out of curiosity would you tell people it was an actual S3 if you knew they weren't able to tell the difference?

Welcome to PH mate.

I agree with the point re insurance. The cost of the mods plus declaring it honestly will be pricey. Also, remember that selling a modified car can be tough - a lot a potential buyers will not even look at the ad. Not saying there isn't a market because there is - but it is a smaller pool of potential buyers.

How about an A3 1.8T Sport? I had one years back and it was a very nice car. Not that quick, book looked smart. Or an Audi TT? Which is basically the same car - I think they did a 150bhp version towards the end of the Mk1 era. 180bhp were the most common so plenty of choice there.

Or failing that you really can't go wrong with a good Mk2 Golf GTI. Lower purchase price may well offset the the conversion / insurance / resale costs of an S3 replica?

Food for thought I hope.

Also, if you are 18 is it worth insuring the car in a parent's name and being a named driver for a year or two?

Firstly thanks for the welcome dr mattsmile

You have definately given me something to think about, i have been looking at a few Mk2 golf GTI's..what a lovely car something old/original and the A3 1.8t, but i never knew the tt was basically the same car underneath.

I think best thing is to shop around and get a few potential cars lined up and then work out the advantages and disadvantages of each one and take it from there.

And if i did buy S3 replica, i wont hesitate to tell them it's a 1.6 or a 1.8 no need to be embaressed is there?? and you dont see 18/19 year olds driving real S3's do you??

Il be happy to own a real nice clean a3, but a s3 rep would really do it for me.
