Hello,

I'm thinking of getting a 4.2 l Audi S8. Seems like an awful lot of car for the money!

Has anyone got or had one of these, and how do you like the car?

Philip.

Had one of these in my work a little while ago awesome car (rocket powered wardrobe comes to mind) but came in with a gearbox fault (mega complicated 4wd triptronic autobox) which left the guy with a £2400 bill! (did include a service and front discs and pads) only when he came to pick it up did he explain that was the second gearbox rebuild in 3 years! car had about 150k on it and is driven hard though.

i've had a 96 4.2 quattro sport for over 4 years, its covered nearly 130000 miles now, every thing still works the body work is excellent and the interior is like brand new.
don't think equivelent age bm's and mercs come close. they're alot 0f car for the money and a bit more exclusive

Thanks for replies - think if I find one with a good service record this should be a good purchase. Seems like the performance bargain of the year!

If you want a good one then this car belongs to my boss and he really has cherished it and it is probably the best early one you will find. All services / work by Audi main dealer.

Indeed thumbup
Large, silly Audis really are the way forward in these car hating times.
Often cheaper than a woodburner of the same age and mileage.

My daily hack is an 2000 3.7 sport with 132k miles on it. It cost me £7k 20 months ago and apart from servicing and tyres the only other expense was a parking sensor (fixed for £150).

It's lovely to drive and returns 33 mpg on the motorway. They are remarkable value.

It keeps the miles off my 550M smile

Just got myself a 1998 S8 from another enthusiast as advertised on pistonheads.

Fantastic machine - has FSH and in super condition.

So easy and relaxing to drive but such amazing performance when you boot it. Surely such a big car shouldn't be so fast and nimble.

I am VERY pleased with it!
