With the recent warm weather the aircon in my Passat (51 plate TDI 130) doesn’t feel as cold as it should, probably due for a top up on the gas. I just wondered are all aircon re-gasses equal? The world and his wife seem to offer a top up these days. Am I OK going to a local reputable place e.g. PTA Motoring Centre / Kwik Fit? Or is there anything special about the gasses required for VWs?
Thanks

But the 25 quid fix wont make your car colder, just eliminate any smell you may or may not have.A cold fix will cost you 65 + the dreaded, no doubt.

Yeh, the £25 option gets you in the door for whats called an anti bacterial service, this is a cannister that is normally set off via a tube down your air vents - and of course whilt you are there Mr Audi sells you the proper service to make the air con colder.
Basically you want a specialist, and when the specialist regases the car they should take the following steps.
1, Recover all exisitng gas in the vehicle so your system is completely empty
2, vacum the system, essential step this , it gets rid of all moisture and crap
3, regas to specific level for your model, the gas should be mixed with a pag oil that lubricates your compressor and also should contain a uv dye, so if in future you get a leak on the sytem, it can be traced quickly and easily.
how do i know this ?
our company sells this very service, £50 plus vat

The aircon in my A3 smells a bit funky for about 30 seconds when you first fire it up, would that mean a re-gas is required or just one of these anit-bacterial service things?.
A lad at work pointed me in the direction of some cannister you can buy and leave in your car with the aircon running for 20 minutes....to be honest it looks cr&p!.
Its plenty cold enough, just a bit reesty when its first turned on.

Halfrauds sell a canister - £31 is the trade price, you hook it up somewhere under the engine and it regasses it.A lad at work pointed me in the direction of some cannister you can buy and leave in your car with the aircon running for 20 minutes....to be honest it looks cr&p!.

You also get comma air con cleaner which doesn't work.

Glad to help. They replaced the compressor on my Golf and did all the right bits to refresh the whole system, dryer etc. and whilst it wasn't cheap (compressor alone was £300) they were substantially cheaper than VW.
