Thinking of Buying and RS6, what to look out for?
Discussion
Hi Guys,
New to this forum, usually on the TVR page.
I have just got rid of my TVR Sagaris and am looking to sell the Vectra estate as well and the closet that i can get to combining both is the mk1 RS6 avant.
What should i be looking out for on purchase?
I know that there are potential problems with the DRC and running cost can be high, but can't be as bad as running a TVR and a Vectra?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
John
I had one for a year for a daily drive, and now run an Aston Vantage which is much cheaper !
LOL
get on www.rs246.com for a wealth of info (and some cars for sale)
If you go near an Audi main dealer in an RS car their eyes seem to light up "ker-ching"
Im sure they think that if joe bloggs will pay £500 for a service on his repmobile then he will easily pay £1K on his £70K estate car
Seriously, a low mile dealer service can be about £600 ..they charge £20 a litre on the oil FFS! and theres over 10L on a 4.2V8 oil change IIRC
then theres the extortionate parts...OEM drilled discs and pads all around from dealer - £1600 ...so make sure to buy the parts on Ebay for about £700 and take it down your local Indie and fit them for £100..they are huge, and 8 pads on the front alone, so not many aftermarket choices
MPG is sub 20mpg if you press on, tyres at £1K a set every 15k-20K (motorway!), discs n pads nearly the same.
Overall, an awesome, practical car and very fast in any weather - I really did love mine and would have another tomorrow, if it wernt for the running costs and the requirement for 24K miles a year on it.
Choice mods - a remap to 510bhp ish, upgrade to RNS-E sat-nav/TV/MP3/Bluetooth ..thats its really - you can get both of those done private on the RS forums
Have fun

Mark,
Thanks for the prompt response.
Notice you have a Sag, how do you like it, didn't want to get rid of mine, but only did 3k miles in it last year and need something more practical due to family and i am not driving around in a Vectra all day!!!!
Fuel consumption is a concern at the moment given the rising prices of petrol, i would expect to sacrifice performance for consumption, but what did you get out of yoyr RS6 on a run compared to running around?
Cheers,
J

The Saggy is cool...in fact is my other half Sarahs daily drive and has done nearly 30K miles now, without major issue, just niggles really. She loves it and we took that and my Vantage on the Furball last year and did 3000 miles in 10 days without bother.Shes done a few track days in it too, and been to Lemans She had a Tuscan before that which did 30K miles before she chopped it in.
The truth be known I think she liked the Tuscan more in some ways - the roof arrangement was great and she used to love going to work, roof down in the summer. The Saggy is more planted and suited to track use and being pushed hard, whereas the Tuscan worked better at 8/10ths on a nice Sunday drive, which is more the kind of useage that suits Sarah.
Its only the fact she might end up doing 24K miles a year for work that she may have to either get rid of it, or buy a runaround diesel for the motorway
We both loved the RS6 and would have another tomorrow...in fact somedays when we had 3 cars on the drive, we used to argue over who was taking it !
I read the review on the new one in Autocar today, and thought...mmm..that will be nice in 3 years time when we are having kids ..it now holds the wet lap record around their test track which shows you what it was good at - smooth, quick, driving in any conditions with any load
Get a good sorted one with warranty and you wont regret it ......

"remapped I bet you dont notice a huge difference from your Sagaris."
missed that bit ....to be honest, the Saggy was still quicker up to 60 and a ton (as long as it was dry!) but over a ton the RS6 felt unstoppable. The big difference is that in a Saggy you have to try, and know what you are doing to extract the best out of it, whereas the RS6 was just so easy to go any speed...even if it was peeing down with rain, just press the accelerator and do 60mph in 4.5secs ..any time...anywhere...it was just so easy
