'98 A4 SE towing electrics

Need to get a towbar fitted to the A4 a bit sharpish, but unsure on the electrics - reading a few sites there seem to be 101 options with 101 opinions on why only "their" method will work.
Well OK, there appear to be 3 options, OEM style plug in that doesn't actually plug in, but is OEM, a 7 way relay or a "smart" 7 way.
What's the score? Thinking cheap and easy here as I'd rather not pay more for the towbar fitting than I did for the car... but then I don't want to cause problems with the existing electrics!
