Just wondered if people could give me pro's and cons of the above?
Both roughly 2000 cars, so 2.7turbo or V8.
My main priority is more refinement than our current Golf GTi pd150, sort of comfy 'drivers' car with excellent seats etc etc
Cheers
Owned the RS6 and RS4 of that era so can semi comment - A/RS/S4 is quite cramped in the back but feels a much smaller car to drive - more of a 'sports car'. A/RS/S6 is great on motorway and is roomy and spacious inside but is a much bigger car. I guess it depends on what it is mostly used for, if you want a big comfy cruiser, go S6 or if something a little smaller go S4. Both roughly 2000 cars, so 2.7turbo or V8.

What sort of price you expecting for your Golf GT TDI 150?
Age/condition/spec/FVWSH?? MOT'd etc?
It's a 2003 53 plate, GTi, very good condition, one scuff on front bumper, climate, radio CD, cassette and Full VW history, belts done, being serviced next week, approx 53k. Not advertised yet, but thought about £8500?Age/condition/spec/FVWSH?? MOT'd etc?

Make sure you pick up a car that had the optional Reacro sports seats (same as the RS4), i have them in my S4 and they're superb. Both roughly 2000 cars, so 2.7turbo or V8.

Be prepared to get your wallet out at the pertol station, these things are not exactly economical, good fun in an stealth/ Q-car kind of way though.

Thanks for the replies.
Pat, that's just the sort of thing I need. I liked the seats in the S6 I drove, which I assume are the Recaro option for the S4, but wasn't aware you could get them in the S4, so that's good news.
I was erring towards the S6, thinking it would offer more refinement and not having the twin turbos of the S4 I thought would be good in case of problems. Anyone know of the turbo's longevity?
Would the S4 give better mpg?
Cheers
my S4 is approx 24 mpg average (mainly town work). The turbos on these things are not terribly stressed, in fact at 265 bhp the whole engine really isn't trying that hard at all, so reliability seems to be good.
I was also considering the S6, i think the 4.2 V8 is a cracking engine but the cost of a good low milage example avant was considerably more than an equivilent age/spec S4.
If i had to choose between the 2 again, i think i would find that extra 4 grand and get the S6. The S4 is a great car but as a previous poster said, they don't actaully have that much room in the back and i really do like that engine....etc etc.
No really........Have i mentioned that V8 engine yet?

What about fuel consumption.... That has to be a consideration between the two & also how often will he really need all the space the S6 has over a slight compromise/more efficient packing the boot in the S4?I was also considering the S6, i think the 4.2 V8 is a cracking engine but the cost of a good low milage example avant was considerably more than an equivilent age/spec S4.

Price wise with the low milage seems fair. Age - 4.5 years will be 5 years by Sept08.
There's bags more space in the S6 but its a different drive to the 2.7 S4.
Very happy indeed with my S6 which was bought to be a quick long distance cruiser. It fits that bill perfectly but can feel a bit huge in the twisties, even though it actually handles well.
I get between 17 and 24 mpg and average about 19.5. Frugal it isnt.
