My owners manual says to replace all four tyres together because the centre diff will be damaged. Thing is that they don't wear at the same rate. So surely as 2 approach needing replacing, while the other 2 are half-worn, I'm going to be in the same situation of possibly damaging the diff.

What's peoples opinions on replacing 4 at the same time regardless of how worn 2 are?

Cheers

Surely as long as you replace an axle set at a time there won't be an issue confused

I think you are supposed to swap them round on a regular basis to ensure even wear.

It apparently winds the central diff up if the tyres are of differing diameters due to wear.

I rotate my tyres so that I get even wear. Different tread patterns also damage the central diff.

Even wear = replace all tyres at the same time with the same tread pattern. Only catch is the 19" jobs on my A6 cost £1000 a set.

Yep transmission wind up is the concern here, In reality as long as you have no more than 4mm difference front to rear then its not a problem.

Side to side is more important about 2mm difference max.
