Hi everyone,
I have a 68' 1200 Beetle and im just giving it a service
with this being my first service i have a question
I have an oil based air filter and wondering how to remove the old oil and replace with new
Also, do i need to change the air filter or just wash it
Any advice will be appreciated
Thanks alot

While since I did this, but if you replace it with a paper type IIRC you need to fit an oil breather as well.
If it's a very original example I wouldn't change it though, it's a far superior system.
You don't have to replace the filter, just clean it. I say "just" clean it... last one I did I used soapy water, more soapy water, just a touch more soapy water, some paraffin, some more paraffin, maybe a bit more paraffin....
Give it a good shake out afterwards (blowline does wonders if you have one) and let it dry out thoroughly before you stick it back on.
Make sure you use the correct grade of oil specified in the manual, or you could run into trouble with it sucking through rather than permeating past the element. Just slosh the old out and refill (off the top of my head I think it's about 1/4 litre at the most you need)
