What are these like to drive, is it too gutless to consider. lease rates seem to be very cheap at the moment on them so wondering if its going to make a reasonable family wagon.

no they go ok, Ive owned a 3.0tdi quattro and a 2.0tdi, straight line drag the 2.0 will hold its own, 3.0 is only quicker right up in the speeds and then its not a lot, plus the 2.0 is soooooooooooooooooo much better on fuel too.

I've just got an auto A6 2.0 TDi Saloon (with the "Limited Edition" spec on a 2 yr contract hire deal), and whilst it's no sports car, it's perfectly acceptable for mooching around the motorway, and actually handles surprisingly acceptably on the twisties.

Also (and I'm going to do this), they are easily remapped to 175 (ish) bhp for a few hundred quid, which strikes me as a good idea. Not that it needs it - just it would be improved if it gave a firmer shove in the back when overtaking.

You will not be doing that if its on a contract hire lease. Its their porperty and you need full approval from them to do it (which they will not give). They could do you for criminal damage - plus if you didnt tell them directly they would know due to the fact you have to declare it on the ins company.

What do you mean "you will not be doing that"? Who do you think you are - my girlfriend? Start giving me BJs and you can start with demands like that.

Think you mean it's dodgy to do that because of the points you mention. Also, the insurance company does not share details with the lease company. The lease company wasn't even interested in seeing a cop of my insurance when I picked the car up from them. I just have to decide if I'm happy taking the chance on the lease company finding out when they get the car back in 2 years, and if they do, if they care enough to want to do anything about it. Having leased and obviously returned cars before, I'm 99% sure they'll never know.
