Very much down to how rusty it is or isn't - the mechanicals on a MK1 are pretty straightforward.

If it doesn't require any welding for an MOT it's probably 2 grand.

Sold mine for £1500 about 5 years ago, the value is sort of stable as the appeal is still there.

Go for one thats as original as possible, modifications are sacrilege (except perhaps uprating the brakes- they're not so good as standard)

Pedant mode but there is no such official model. The genuine run out models of the mk1 were all spec'd up as standard and the nickname stuck, there are several stories as to where the name came from. I can't remember the chassis number run you need but a quick looky on Club GTi might reveal all. They are the most desirable, along with the early 1600's, amoungst the Classic set. But they do need to be original.

In my 'Lottery' garage I'd have two. Both '84 models one completely standard and one modded to within an inch of its life!

The reason asking was because I borrowed a friends about 5 years ago and it was stolen. He reckons he paid £2200 for it and it would now be worth well in excess of this figure.

It's head gasket blew the AA towed me to Stokenchurch where it was nicked and then a farmer scrapped it .....its a long story. IT was not in that good nick, the exhaust feel off the month before the head gasket went.

Quick answer.
Golf GTI 1800 Pirelli Campaign. Exhaust fallen off, head gasket gone, looking like a scrapper left in a field, which a Farmer, without hesitation scraps----is worth nothing.

Clean low mileage £3-4k
Average £2K
Resto £1k

Eh?
didn't you just say your old one was stable at 15?

Take a look at this

Flea

Or this

Flea

Or £2k-sold-

Flea

Or buy it now £1500

Flea

None of them that clean, either got at or big miles.

However something clean and original like this......

Flea

........the bids'll sart at £3.5k

So in essence, if your mate can end up with a grand, he's winning.
