Hello,

I've got a problem with my Mk2 GTi, i suspect it is either gearbox or clutch but i am open to being proved wrong/right.

When i reverse the car 'stutters', it feels like i've got the handbrake on or there is something under the wheels stopping it from moving backwards smoothly.
At the moment it seems fine going forwards although i have noticed an occasional whine coming from the transmission when the car is deccelerating.

Today i had the car parked in neutral and was revving it from under the bonnet and i could hear what sounded like a marble in the engine when the revs were dropping.

Can anybody tell me what the problem might be? I fear if i continue using the car as it is something is going to go pop!

Any help/advice appreciated.

Thanks.

could be a chipped tooth off the reverse gear/idler gear, just drive it till it falls apart - your cars worth about £2.50 so sont worry.

Ps mines worth 3 sticks of wrigleys gum according to some tool on here so I'm jealous of yours.

I had a mechanic look at it earlier and it would seem the clutch has disintergrated...

Clutch kit is 60 quid, on the plus side smile

I've done 3 in not many more years in my 16v so don't worry about it laugh

£60 is not bad! I was thinking it would cost about £200 to get it done a Mr Shoddy or someplace similar.

I wouldn't do a clutch myself, it would be too much hassle.

I am thinking of selling the car as it stands and getting something else, as much as i like the mk2 golf gti i am feeling it's time to move on frown

If the car is clean and sound otherwise I'd find a cheapo man to change the clutch out first - dead one will turn off a lot of prospective buyers.
