Okay, 1989 Mk2 Golf GTI 8v, oil temp wh fully warmed up can be anywhere between 104 and 110 degrees on the MFA. Water temperature is *just* over halfway.

I've got a feeling my oil shouldn't be running that hot. Does anyone what it should be, and what could be causing it to run hot if the water temp's okay?

A friend had suggested that the oil cooler, does it have an oil cooler?

Sorry if this is a very thick question.

It has an oil/water heat exchanger, this could be blocked with crud on the waterside, give it a flush through, might be a cheap fix for you.

Is this is normal driving or wringing it to death?

Doesnt seem too far out to me.

My mates 8v race car runs around 100 with a seperate oil cooler.

I've run Mk2 8 v and 16v Golf GTI's for many years and the oil temp was consistently around 98 on a cold day on the motorway rising to 114+ stuck in traffic, the fan cut in at around 114. I never had a problem with overheating in over 10 years. They all run hot, dont worry , your car sounds normal.

Mine has run in exactly the same range as the above for the 30,000 miles I've done in it smile

Cheers for the replies chaps, I'll take it that everything's okay then. I had terible visions of the oil being burnt to st and bits of my lovely reconditioned engine turning to jelly.

Off to find something lese to worry about now.
