A3 TDI Quatrro Sport - Around 2002/2003 or an S3

I am considering either buying an S3 (around 2002) or a similar aged A3 Tdi Sport Quattro. After loving 4wd drive cars I want to stick with all wheels driving!

One of my friends has a 1.9tdi (PD) and has recently had it remapped to 178bhp - which sounds healthy, given the 40+ mpg he regularly sees.

What would the difference between an S3 and a remapped A3tdi Quattro Sport really be (so say 170bhp)? Other than the noise and the smell coming from the pipe? I'm guessing the diesel would have a lot more torque?
