Hi all ,I was looking to buy a 2000-2001 Audi A6 avant quattro 2.5TDI ,the cars have all between 100k-120k miles on them .Prices around 5500 to 6000grand . Am I mad buying one with this milage ,is this price realistic and what should I really be looking for in the problem areas for this car . Havent bought so high milers before but cant spend more .
Appreciate any guidance before buying a bad one.

Tony

Dont do it! buy another car or at least one with another engine. 2.5 major failiers include:- Injection Pump (£1000+), oil filter housings cause major crankcase pressure problems (£400+), which make for lost of oil leaks (£200-400) and turbo's play up all the time (£1000).

Oh dear, depressing news.Does the 2.5tdi improve for later models or is it all bad .I had my heart set on the A6 AVNT QUATTRO 2.5TDI .I had an older Range Rover and if you read all that goes wrong you´d never buy one but mine didn´t suffer from all the notorious problems. What audi engines are reliable as through the years they all seem to have serious failing problems .

The cost of buying and running a 2.8q is very close to that of the 2.5q unless you do big mileage.

Is there anything that can be done to mitigate these problems?

Just bought a 2004 2.5 TDI A4 and now you've got me concerned!

If you need a diesel why not get the 1.9TDi and boost it? The 2.5 will not give that much economy, esp. around town.

Even a 1.8T will be more fun to drive due to being lighter in the nose (and boostable again) - it will return 30+mpg.

Because there's no such thing as an A6 1.9tdi Quattro. 1.9 was FWD only on the A6.

Regular servicing and good quality fuel (shell V power) will help, but they are a bit like a ticking time bomb, could go for 60-100 miles no probs, or it could let you down tomorrow.

The oil filter housing causing pressure build up and oil leaks is most common fault, just keep an eye out for leaks. When you work on cars for a living, you do tend to only see broken ones. There must be many out there that go on and on too.

I worked on an older A4 the other day 99V i think, put the second turbo on it at 180,000miles, Had the first one at 100,000 too. Its got loads of oil leaks, But its still going.

It didnt improve much as far as I can see. I did see a 2005 car for service at 80K, with the belts changed (thats a £1000 bill by the way) first 2.5tdi I ever seen with no oil leaks. So they are not all bad if your hearts set on it.

The Subaru´s are reliable I know ,if not better than the German stuff but they are tinny things and drink lots of full with no diesel option . How is the realiability of the BMW 530D,or the big Mercs for that matter in comparison. I really wanted another quattro (4x4) for the winter .Ive had 2 ur quattros, coupe quattro 20v,A4 1.9tdi & 1.8t ,the A4tdi had a major failure on the Cat coverter at 25kmiles (FIXED UNDER WARRENTY).

thks for your helpful comments
