Changing stereo in current Golf?

Hi all, just a quick question I was hoping someone could answer for me, or at least help out...

I have a 1.9 tdi golf, current shape (Mk V?) and it has the full face crappy single slot CD player (it's an '05) and have an alpine standard slot aftermarket stereo I'd like to install..

I've spoken to a local car audio place, and they say they'll have to dismantly the whole dash to install this?? Needless to say, they quoted a considerable cost to do this, and I'd like to have a go at doing it myself..

So my question is this : is it possible, and if so how easy / difficult is it?

2nd question is do I need to buy anything to install in to the presumably big hole that will be left, in order to fit the new smaller sized unit?
