Hi all

I am just a little confusd with the golf mk4 pd engines. I am looking to buy a '51 reg' 2001 mk4 gt tdi. The advert said 115bhp, but the pictures showed red D and red I, hence 130bhp. Looked at the details on 'Parkers Price Guide' and it showed that 130bhp was available from 2002, but this is 2001!!! Does not add up. Checked with main dealer and they also said it is a 130bhp.

Question is: is parkers wrong and the 130bhp was available from 2001?? Or is it some thing else that I am missing!!!?

Please could any one advise! Thanks.

Hi there,

My son owns a 2001 Y-reg Mk4 Golf GT TDI 115BHP, it has a RED D and a I, it is 100% definately a PD engine and 100% definately 115BHP.

IIRC PD engined cars all come with a 6 speed 'box, as does my sons.

To find out the power of the vehicle in question have a look under the boot carpet and there will be a factory sticker, on there amongst other codes etc. there will be a power rating in KW.

115BHP = 85KW
130BHP = 96KW

Try a search on google or on PH, to try and find out the exact dates each model was launched.

My son has owned his car for 18 months, and equiped it with the obligatory 18" wheels, it was bought for economy, performance and relatively cheap insurance for his age, 18.

Other than a few minor niggles here and there it has been a very reliable car, as most people will tell you there isn't much difference in performance between the 115bhp and 130 versions.

Hope this helps.

badges don't mean much I'm afraid, some dealers just used whatever they had available, iirc the difference between the 115 & 130 & 150 pd engines are uprated internals & a different ecu map

Ignore the badging and check the engine code to be certain.
