high mileage RS6 - steer clear?
Discussion
Hi All
Been talking to a friend about an RS6 he's got and its coming up on 100k miles but has a full main dealer service history and one previous owner. He's trying to get me to trade up and at a good price but I'm concerned about the mileage on a twin turbo car. Its v straight and honest so it looks like its been cared for.
What are the biggest problems I should look out for at this mileage? I'm a bit of a know-nothing when it comes to Audis (although have always been a fan)
Thanks in advance

On an RS6?
Generic stuff:
Tyres are expensive
Brakes are expensive
Specific stuff:
DRC (suspension) will peepee its oil everywhere sooner or later. Replace with coilovers from £1300 fitted.
Gearboxes can die of twin-turbo V8 abuse if chipped/thrashed.
Main dealers are scary. Go to a knowledgeable specialist.
You are absolutely guaranteed responses on here of 'very disappointing' - but you have to bear in mind that it's a 180mph steam roller. Not a Ferrari. They're hilarious to drive and will make a mapped 335d owner look like he has a very tiny willy indeed, end of.
Oh, and have a scout around this forum, there have been some excellent RS6 discussions lately.

Go onto the Thamesvalley section and have a search for John-R threads about his RS6, I think he got his from Camberley Audi and has had about 10k worth of warranty claims already.
Go into it with eyes open and a full Audi Warranty!
I brought the car from Peterborough Audi... and the warranty claims are running to approx £15k in 6 months at the moment. And I think the DRC has just eaten itself again so that'll be another £3k'ish!Go into it with eyes open and a full Audi Warranty!
I'll be selling the car in Q1 next year and I will include a further 12 month Audi warranty as I would not want to sell the car without it. Although to be honest, every common fault has been fixed on mine now so it will be very very sorted when it's sold!
If you are buying a car privately, I would suggest investing £200-£300 quid taking the car to a specialist before you buy it to get a general 'health check' - Doug at MRC is an expert on RS6's and will very quickly find any faults or potential issues.
However...
DO NOT BUY AN RS6 UNLESS IT INCLUDES, OR YOU CAN BUY, A BOMB-PROOF WARRANTY!JCW_Matt said:
I find it very disshapointing that such a car has such problems.
Is it all of them or just odd ones?
The B5 RS4 seems to be worth more than the RS6 now which is just crazy! Maybe this is because of the reliabilty issues... who knows.
Don't get me wrong though - even with the issues I've had, the car is still outrageous fun and a hoot to drive! I'm only selling it after Xmas because I have a GTR on order... and I'll be gutted to see it go. Especially after all the work done as it'll be an absolute minter! Is it all of them or just odd ones?

It's a Porsche twin turbo kind of performance car that you can do anything with, and still keep the family happy. And leave it in town without worrying about the "wrong" kind of attention. And coast past police cars with a cloak of invisibility. Buy it but get a warranty and enjoy!
