Been planning on getting the mk 5 golf gti for a while but im now going after an a4 as i want a good motorway cruiser.
has anyone had experience on any of the 2? Im looking to spend 7-8k so can probably get an average miler b6 or a higher miler b7 (same engine as golf gti).
I have also posted on audi-sport.net to get as many opinions as possible

You're probably better off sticking with the Golf GTI in that company.
It rides, handles, goes and stops better than either of the A4 options and is the more desirable car.
The only area an A4 would pull a clear lead is in terms of the 'feel' or 'quality' of the car. Both are very well screwed together, however.

i've owned both a 1.8T 54 plate 190bhp quattro and am 06 2.0tfsi 230bhp quattro.
dont touch the 1.8t unless you like underpowered,heavy steeringed,spine breaking ride, dated looking cars.
The 06 plate car was a dramatic improvement - like chalk and cheese.
