Hi all, my friend drives a mk4 53-reg Golf Match 1.6 with 38,000mi on it, after start-up the orange engine light comes on and 'Emissions Workshop!' appears on the DIS, it drives fine but does anybody have any ideas what it might be? I was thinking perhaps it could be a faulty o2 sensor or something in the Catalytic Converter.

The light in question comes on if a fault is logged. My money would be on it being a coolant sensor. Very common on the mk4 but only way to confirm is to read the fault code on vag.com or the like

Would could all name an engine management sensor that it might be, there are hundreds of things that can bring that light on. Although coolant temp sensor if a favorite agreed.

Only way to know is to have to fault memory checked, any one with an OBD scanner can do it, dont need VAG's 5051 or VAGCOM any code reader will do.

'Emissions Workshop' is a common message on the Golfs, best to get someone with vagcom to check it or take to the dealers.

She said it came up about 2 months ago and went into the local garage (Caffyns Ford) and it came back with a £1,100 bill, but now 2 months on it's back

Take it back and complain then, £1100 is a awful lot to spend if they havent done the job properly.

Agree take it back to them, but (and its important) if the lights on for a different reason this time,(and there are hundreds of things that can bring it on) its really not there fault, £1100 bill or not.

Would be interested to know what they did for £1100 for the emissions light being on??? Was it in for a service or something else at the same time??

Nope, when I had a look, I started it up and said Service in 200mi, it's going in on Thursday I think.
Sorry, I can't find out what it was, she just says "I don't know, it had something..."
