MK2 Golf dash buttons
Discussion
An unusual one but just to satisfy by curiousity, can anyone tell me what the bottom 3 buttons are used for on the MK2 dash (to the right of the stereo there's 2 rows of 3 buttons, the top three are foglights and rear demister I think). I have NEVER seen the bottom three buttons used, no "optional" extras I can think of that are available that could use them either.
Which functions required them? Or were they put there "just in case" but subsequently nothing was developed that required them etc......
Yes, I had a mk2 16v years ago and the bottom 3 buttons were blank then

optional electric-seat switch would use up one blank.
another possibility is that cheap car-stereos in the early eighties lacked built-in fader-controls,so you could spec.your new golf with a rotary thumbwheel-type fader that fitted in place of one of the blanks.
but what,if anything, fitted in place of the blank above the main light-switch at the r/h end of the dash?

You could have had:
Heated r screen
Fogs
heated seats
Stereo fader
Heated r screen and fogs were all on the top row.Heated r screen
Fogs
heated seats
Stereo fader
Never seen heated seats on a MK2, or a stereo fader for that matter.
Anyway, I remember in the 80s/90's blank buttons were there to tell you that you had the poverty spec edition
Top of the range cars all had buttons, bottom of the range had blanks. Many cars now have interior design such that blank buttons aren't obvious. Unless you buy a Merc, even top of the range Mercs look like they have more blanks than buttons

Were all these genuine options? Anyone ever seen them in the UK?
As well as the MK2, I used to own a MK1 Golf that had one blank button. Since I was young, I got a blank button (i.e. you could switch it on/off) and told people in the car NEVER to switch the button on, despite it not being connected to anything but for a laugh to see if anyone couldn't resist pressing the button

Just thought - there is also a switch for the electric ariels fitted to some non gti 16v cars.
And on early mk2s pre 1989 the Hazard warning switch was on the dash on the top run of the switches next to the rear demister + fog lights but on later 1989-1992 cars the hazard switch was moved to the steering wheel surround
anorack mode is now off...

As above, OEM options:
Hazard warning switch (CE1 cars only)
Combined front/rear fog light switch
Heated rear window switch
Blaupunkt radio fader (single roller)
Heated front seats(two rollers in one switch)
Electric sunroof switch (I have never seen a UK mk2 with an electric sunroof however I have seen a mk2 style OEM open/close switch so must have been an option somewhere)
Headlight raise / lower (single roller) - generally fitted above headlight switch RHS of dash console
Main headlight switch usually fitted lower RHS of console incorporating dash lighting horizontal roller
Electric window switches will also fit here but were generally installed on lower centre console
