A panel filter is enough. To make more of it, remove the plastic blanking plate from the inside of the wing and drill holes down the WING side of the airbox, run a cold air feed from the lower front bumper section upwards toward the front of the air box. Finally remove the baffle from inside the air box. This will allow a good flow of cold air to the air filter. At this time of year it is worth keeping the hot air feed from the manifold to the rear of the air box as it does help the engine warm up faster in winter.
I used to run a 8v digi and had a K&N cone filter set up on it and the car ran dreadfully on hot days as the filter sucks too much hot air from the engine side of the bay. A heatsheild might help but then all you are doing is effectievly making a cone filter with 2 solid sides ie semi enclosed which is pretty pointless. I swapped back to the set up i described above and was very happy with the results.
Bare in mind VW spent a hell of a lot m
