Hi guys, thinking of buying a MkV R32 DSG. What are the known problems? I have heard that trim rattles are fairly common e.g., the central mesh on top of the dash board + drivers door rattle (speaker shields).

Any more? and are these problems easy to rectify???

IIRC there was something about a batch of soft cam chain spockets that would lose their teeth over time, error looks like a cam/crank sensor issue but is much more involved. Main issue is depreciation, as Vw are dropping the price to sell unwanted new stock in the UK. £7k off list is easy apparently, causing knock on effect to second hand values ontop of the general economic climate.

I have had one for 2.5 years and done 40k miles without any major problems (touch wood). I still love it although be aware that it is attracted to petrol stations but I can manage 30mpg average on long runs.

If the cars you're looking at have the optional Recaro seats have a good look over them as the leather comes away from the hard plastic backing and from under the seat. Mine has been in twice to have them repaired under warranty.

It's a brilliant car and with the bargains that around just now thanks to the Chancellor f@cking the market for large capacity cars but even with £400 road tax it's a brilliant car.

One word of caution, the V6 connected to the DSG gearbox coupled with the 4WD meants it is extremely smooth and uneventful which can make it feel slow and almost boring. The DSG box is so smooth you don't really get the sensation of acceleration as you do with a manual because it's constant. Another thing you really need to change your driving style to get the most out of DSG therefore don't make any judgements on it after a 5mins drive.

Hi,

I bought a 2007 57 R32 and it's already had 3 problems. Currently back with the dealer for the 2nd time. Problems:-

1) Loss of coolant (reported by computer, and was certainly correct! - no fault reported by dealer)
2) Intermittant operation of rear wiper
3) Engine stutter - engine management light came on and it consistently hesitated at low RPM. Popping and spitting. I'm told it's the coil packs, but I'll know more tomorrow when I get it back.

Still love the car and really hope the dealer can fix it. Oh yes, they are thirsty!

They have lent me a brand new Scirocco which is worth trying, but it's certainly too small for me!

Hope this helps!

Mark

I used to have a manual on a 55 plate. Developed a crunchy second gear after about 40K miles. VW kindly fitted a new gearbox. That was the only problem I had (apart from the rattly mesh which you have already mentioned).

So 911dreamer, how did you fix the rattle from the mesh? yourself, or at the dealer?

A big problem is how greatly they're targeted by thieves. Not saying this to scare anyone - owning any nice car has some kind of risk attached to it now - but just be careful to not put keys on display, make sure you've got decent locks on your doors, security glass etc.

Why a MK4 over 5? I have never driven a MK4 R32, but have owned a MK5 R32 and a MK4 4 Motion. The MK4 4 Motion wasn't very good.

Never driven a 4Mo but I don't feel that it was marketed as a high performance vehicle ... I've driven both a MK V an MK IV R32 and the MK IV is the better car in my opinion. The MK V is too common as well.
