I'm looking to buy a fun second car. Thought about a Porsche 964, but maybe something more practical might be handy for the girlfriend and kids - an estate could take the family on our yearly trip to the South of France, it would sure be more fun than the company car wink

I'm looking at something more than 15 years old, very interesting for insurance and tax in Belgium, rwd or 4x4, manual gearbox. So the obvious choices are RS2 or M5 Touring. Or is there something else?

What are the positive and negative points of either car? Anyone have experience with one of them?

Thanks already for the help

Had this topic on the M-Power forum as well, had a bit more replies there, but that's no problem of course. I'm slightly preferring the RS2 anyway, I think it would feel very special to own, and I'd be a happy guy opening my garage door if an RS2 was in it...

So, with my mind almost made up... Does anyone have ownership experience? What to look out for when buying? And what to pay? Prices vary a lot on the net, depending on state and mileage of course. Can they handle big mileages? When do the belts need changing? Costs of maintenance? A lot of questions, I know, but help is much appreciated...

one i fancied for ages ,but they are LHD only. Audi S6plus. www.s6plus.de

first quattro gmbh car. C4 (100/A6) chassis, 4.2 V8 326bhp, all LHD, only ever manual and every bit as rare as the RS2, if nto moreso. 1 year of production 96-97, not quite on your age limit but oddball.

A pal of mine just bought an RS blue RS2 a few months ago to replace his S2 avant. Not been for a run yet but he is over the moon with it. and i am a little envious!

Its really the benchmark fast estate for what it is, i know the older M5 and to some degree the earlier mercs also fall in this category, the the RS2 is a little bit special imho. has that kudos about it.

Yes, I've got one. Wanted one for ages. It's brilliant.

It was nice when I bought it in the summer of last year and it's a bit better now.

I'm using it as my everyday car and I'm sure it benefits from being used; 15,000 miles in that time, so 10,000 miles p.a. average. Including everything from three major mechanical sortings out to do with poor performance, right down to petrol and insurance, it has cost me £200 per week to run. That does not include the cost of buying it or any depreciation. And I'm hoping it won't depreciate too much!

As it had FASH I have kept this up for annual service and MoT. Anything tricky - and there's lots - it's better to go to one of the many specialists. MRC in Banbury and ACS in Andover spring to mind.

There are dedicated forums for the RS2 on the various Audi websites, RS246, AudiSRS and the S2forum, for example. I received a lot of useful advice and encouragement from the lads there when mine was being a tart.

When it's not being temperamental - and fortunately that's most of the time - it is just the best car I've owned. It has a subtle ageless quality to it, and even a few luxury touches, that mean you can take it to expensive venues without feeling like the poor relation, it is an estate car so you can go big shopping or to the tip, and it's a seriously competent road burner. It is so fast, so quick off the mark and so faithful and predictable on all roads in all weathers you wonder why the contemporary road testers were a bit faint about it.

You will surprise a lot of drivers in fast modern cars by what you and the RS2 can do. So don't be surprised yourself when some of them do extraordinarily foolish things to try and prove you wrong. wink

It's the first car I've owned for a long time that I take out regularly just for the pleasure of driving it.

There are 129 of the 182 UK spec RHD cars still in circulation. They do come up. Take your time and find one that has been cared for and has had heaps of money spent on it at the time it was required. You will soon be able to see the ones that have had too little, too late in the way of maintenance.

See if the brakes are good, they are Porsche 968 CS and are expensive. Beware of leaks from the turbo plumbing, this will radically affect the performance; tired suspension, it will clonk; and wavy trim, it should all be straight. Ones that haven't been used much will probably be rusty underneath.

Mine is black and almost invisible in traffic. If you want to stand out a bit, buy one in Nagaro blue. If you really, really want to stand out, don't buy an RS2.

Limited to 165mph, 0-60 in 4.9. I'm a bit of a fan.

Awesome cars... i sold my RS2 a while back to buy a friends B5 RS4 (deal fell through) going back for another Audi RS2 after spending too long looking at other S and RS Audis and other performance cars. Not many performance cars can gain `the nod` from big bikes but i had it a few times from bikers when we went for it. Missed mine from the moment i sold it and nothing ive been in has come close to the total package of stealth, performance and practicality... to sum it up in one word `icon`. Lifes too short buddy find one, buy it and enjoy! Wheres Tom lol

Well, I'm convinced! No RS2's to find in Belgium though, looks like it will be Germany or the UK...

I've spent some time on the other forums DickyC suggested and found a lot of usefull information, and thanks for the guys here for the help. Feel free to keep posting, love reading about your RS's wink
