its going to be a conversion, check everything very carefully.
exhaust manifolds etc will have been custom manufactured or bodged in and I would expect it to be on cars rather than the injection system so make sure the carb seals arent leaking and that the set up is in tune.
also, you may wish to see if they bothered to add a servo to the brakes and whether its got bigger discs and calipers, mk1 brakes were pretty awful on a standard 1.8 8v so would be potentially lethal on a more powerful version.
it wont be worth as much as an original example, however it will go like stink, have fun!

sounds like a lot of fun!!!
do you know much about the car, is it a early or late model, has it always been a GTI? Id want to make sure the shell is in good condition as engines can be swapped again but its harder doing bodywork - check sills/arches/wings/bootfloor/suspension turrets/windscreen surround for signs of rot!
what donor engine and car was used to do the conversion? id want to know if its a 9A or ABF engine, what management is it on - is it using the majority of the original K-Jet system or has the donor vehicle supplied its ignition system or is it stand alone management.
if its all been built properly using a sound shell then a 2.0 16v mk1 is a serious weapon and perfect for track use!

So it hasnt always been a GTI then but it sounds like you have most of the basic ingredients. You say the brakes have been upgraded (hopefully to 256mm if you are running 15 inch wheels), I would check that you have a decent size master cylinder - 22mm is the one to go for as golfs are notorious for there slightly soft brakes. Koni suspension is good stuff to so you ought to be able to handle the power and stop ok which is always good!!
A 2.0L with cams (could be that its using aftermarket or the cams from a 1.8 16v engine as these are a popular upgrade to a 2.0) pistons which im guessing are high compression and a 4 branch then yes 175hp is very realistic. Depending on the gearbox being used - should think a 1.8 16v is most likely on your car you should almost certainly be able to break into the 6s to 60 an 14-low 15s 1/4mile.
What are you intending to use the car for - will it be a track beast or more of a road car? Depending on where you are in the world there are some very good VW tuning companies who could chuck your car on the rolling road and give it a good set up.
for some good information the mkl owners club an club gti are very good.

I know the car your thionking of with the g60 steel wheels or the ronal's
it looks very nice and looks as if its been done to a good standard
most golf engines arepretty bullet proof providing the right servicing
As for fun i have a a 2 litre 16v mk1 and in the previous owners hands it managed 8 51 round the ring
1 min 26 round donny and is an absolute gem
it out brakes out corners out handles most cars on track.
Im sure at the price that ones up for you will need to work on it but its a bargain.
