I have a 140, which is basically the same.

No problems, good features, quick enough, minimum 50mpg on the motorway.

FWIW I tried a 170 and couldn't really tell the difference.

I like DSG but don't have it on mine. Tried it on my brother's GTI and it's very useable and the auto is good for around town.

Is it the same turbo on the 140 as the 170 ?
think the dsg would be good for lazy reasons as it'll ultimately be the mile muncher?

Different turbo on the 170 to the 140, id suggest try before you buy, as someone who drives these most days i find the dsg 170 doesn't like pulling out of junctions/islands quickly, just seems to spin the wheels. I personally find the 140 a better car with dsg. Also give the 140 tsi a shot, it might surprise you.

Main fault is the DPF. They dont like been used for lots of short journies, and this causes the DPF system to clog up and require professional attention. Its quite a common problem, look on uk-mkivs and the seat forums. Unless the car is going to be used for pretty much all long distance driving then I would probably sugggest you look at the TSI 170 or TDI 140 engines which do not suffer these problems.

Mate at work has a Golf 140 DSG and raves about it, but he says that (as with all semi/autos IMO) he played with the semiauto part of it for a while but now just sticks it in D.

DSG is amazing though, you just can't catch it out, my only gripe is that even in +- mode it still makes decisions for you that are too early.
