which specification was the best (eg, 1200, 1300, 1600 etc)

any views and opinions would be sweeeeet

two specialist VW mechanics said its the 1200 that is the best?

Depends what you want it for.

Do you just want a stock reliable unit or do you want something with a bit of poke?. Street use or for use on the strip etc?.

Whats it going in, bug, van, square, fasty etc?

TBH none of them were 'great' engines. 3 bearing crank, poor oil filtration, poor head port design. They were however super reliable & remarkably simple.

Which is best? The 1200 is a smaller lump (1300 & 1600 share the case) & has agruably better airflow around the cylinders but has less power than a sandal. The bigger units are still mega reliable.

If you're thinking 'hang on - they can't be that reliable because the damn things are always littering the hard shoulder on the M1' - they fail for 2 reasons, either poor oil pressure at high rpm caused by worn crank / bearings (due to lack of maintenance) or a fire due to perished fuel hoses leaking(again, lack of maintenance).
