Wanted - Golf GTI
Discussion
Lots around but make sure it is mint and never damaged.
Despite the hype, do not get the Monza 2s (18 inch) unless you really must have the looks - the ride is worse and you WILL kerb them (we have 17s on ours and a friend 18s, so this is first hand).
Engine water leaks are becoming common on the pipe that runs across from the thermostat housing (right hand end of engine) - not a big issue but a fiddle to sort out.
Great cars generally, just do the usual checks and buy carefully.

Disagree with the 18" ride comment - find the ride fantastic - and I live in the sticks with appauling roads, but it's horses for courses, recommend you try both before you buy - as you said, plenty around.
The 2.0T engine seems to be pretty much bullet proof though - had plenty of time to develop it - had that engine in a couple of cars and it's never missed a beat.
Good luck - you'll love it - but you can afford to be picky given the market and number of cars around...

Not a Golf GTI but similar engine in my 'rocco - engine code EN American spec 1.7 has gone over 100K miles for me, using Redline oil, seems to be none the worse for the wear. I think if well cared for these engines are very long lived, and if it needs a "refresh" it's not that hard or expensive to do. Parts availability is good, many mechanical bits available at the dealer, plus several good aftermarket outfits.
Hot rod stuff is available as well, if you want to go there.
