I am going to have a look this afternoon at a Mk2 3 door GTi 2.0 16V, M reg (1994)(One of the last Mk2's) Mettalic Grey. Apparently its done 85,000 genuine miles and is in perfect condition, 2 owners. He wants £1000 for it.

I've looked at the classifieds on here and it seems like a bargain, is it? I'm buying to sell it on by the way. wink

Edited to say : All the Mk2's in the classifieds have been for sale for over 15 days. I#m pressuming they're hard to get rid of?

I was wondering that, when did they stop building them? It's M Reg.

There were a few K plate Mk2's, but not many at all, so cant see it being a Mk2 on an M.

Also the Mk2 16v is 1.8l, not 2l, so has it had an engine conversion?

clearly on a M reg it would be a MK3 golf inless it was one of the last MK2s hiding at the back of a forcourt sometime after MK3 were released that was never registered on time.

I have heard of K reg MK2s (mostly 5door GTI 8v in white or red) and there is a N reg one around but that was a result of a DVLA cockup as it was previously registered overseas.

as for MK2s being difficult to get rid of, nope i dont believe that, there is always a demand for good honest GTIs, look on Club GTI or E38 or Mk2 owners club and there are few changing hands for good money.

3dr in matalic paints are the most desirable and post 1989 Big Bumper 90spec seem to be prefered to small bumper pre 1989 models.
These cars with 80-180k on the clocks are still fetching anywhere from £250- £2500+

If the car is a mk3 then £1000 for a 80k 2owner GTI if its a 16v is a slightly below average price as some are still on the market for nearer £2000.

Too right they are!!!!! ive seen all sorts of cheap motors in supermarkets as people think it isnt worth paying to have the car properly advertised. Picked up a Merc E230 for £800 and a Golf GTI £275 after seeing.

Good luck finding out more about the car... if the owner really doesnt know what they have then haggle even harder than normal ;-)

It could be a mk2. My mate has an N plate one. There are a few out there although generally the last of them were "L" plates.

your mate has the N reg - seriously there are only going to be a silly small number of K, l , M , N reg mark 2 as production officially stopped in 1992 which is J/K era and mark 3 were available from 1992 on J plates so it is fair to assume the mk2 and mk3 were being built at the same time for no more than a year.

I have seen several K reg mark 2 golfs Never heard of a M reg at all an was aware of 1 N reg.

to help clarify

here is a MARK 3 - from 1992-1998

here is a MARK 2 from 1983-1992 - note pic is of 1990 spec big bumper model
