Idle Problem on mk.2 Golf 16v - Help!
Discussion
Get one thing sorted and another starts!
I'm having an intermittent running problem on my Golf. Basically what happens is that after revving the engine, the revs drop all the way off before returning to normal idle level. This is sometimes enough to stall the car, sometimes not. Normal idle is around 800rpm and stays pretty much constant, so no problems there. However if you go above around 2k, as soon as you let off the revs shoot down and the problem starts.
It only does this around 1/4 of a time, but is more than enough to be rather annoying. I've now resorted to flicking it into neutral and left foot braking, which isn't very good in slow moving traffic. Other than that, the car drives fine and no other problems engine wise.
I think the car only does this when hot. I say think, as it's only done it tonight and last Saturday (only used it for a few short journeys during the week.) At first I thought it might be water getting to the dizzy so I covered that in a silicone based spray. It may or may not be coincidence that it's been tipping down both times. Any ideas?

On a valver it's the ISV or associated system 99% of the time rather than air leaks etc...
First thing to do is pop off the Idle Stabilisation valve near the cold start injector -put a splash of petrol in the 'air' end and leave it to soak to clean it out (don't use brake or carb cleaner, they can damage it). The petrol that went in clear will come out black and sooty!
Now reconnect it, with the ignition on but engine not running you should be able to hear the ISV buzzing quite noticeably. If it doesn't buzz then you've got a duff ISV or a duff ISV controller (black box behind the centre console).
Assuming it does buzz (yours isn't stalling all the time so I think you're ok) you need to set your idle speed. With a warm engine, disconnect the fan and disconnect the blue wire going to the dizzy (single spade connector in line, wire is on its own). With these two connected and the engine running you need set teh idle speed to 1000+-100 with the idle screw on the throttle body and get the COs to about 2 using the CO screw immediately in front of the metering head (long allen key needed).
with a nice stable idle and COs set reconnect the fan and the blue wire and you should be sorted
