Ok I tried searching first... (honest)

Can anybody please explain the quattro naming philosophy? (Ur, WR, RR etc)?

What's the difference, is it just model year?

Cheers

UR = the original quattro turbo
WR, MB and RR are the different versions of engine in the Ur quattro - WR was the early one, MB was the 87 onwards and RR was the final 20v version.

Thanks for that.

Buying one? Well maybe. I'm possibly looking at a weekend/fun car which needs 4 seats, is interesting and <£15k-ish. I figure a nice quattro would be an interesting choice (I drove one when I was 17 and loved it) and shouldn't be affected too badly by depreciation...

Probably appreciating. I reckon mine is worth slightly more than I paid for it 11 years ago. You will definately get one for <£15K but speak to Roger Galvin at "The Quattro Workshop" (01455 208037) before you do - he is the owners club guru on all things quattro & has run his own business servicing, restoring, repairing & selling them for years . Even Audi UK ask his advice from time to time as they have no quattro experienced people left now. He has several for sale, but they will all be good ones. Roger has serviced my car for 10 years and I would not take it anywhere else now. Don't buy one with a Dialynx manifiold, make sure it has a FSH from a recognised quattro expert (and there are not many) & remember that some spares are in short supply including body panels so don't buy one "needing work".

He lives out beside us, maybe you need to educate the man!

Lefty, the very clean red one you might see with the ring sticker belongs to Ian.

IMHO 2226cc MBs are good value and worth having over a 2144 WR. They are less laggy and have a few worthwhile detail improvements without the significant additional cost of a 20v RR.
If cash no abject, the 20V is the one.
All lovely cars though and as close to depreciation proof as you can get.

The spare supply for some items on quattros is getting iffy thanks to Audi's poor attitude to their heritage but the one with the least parts supply issues is the MB, IIRC.
