Pitfalls of 1997 Audi S6 ownership (C4 Typ 4A?)
Discussion
Hi all,
I am looking at buying an S6 from 1997 and have absolutely no idea what to look for. I have tried the search function on here for "S6" but with no results showing.
Does anyone have any handy hints on a) whether this is a good proposition for a daily driver and if so, what I should be wary of when viewing?
Details:
Year: 1997
Mileage: 71000
Service history: Full service history but with a 3 year gap - car didn't cover mileage for next service interval but I would assume these cars have an annual and mileage maintenance schedule?
Price: £2775.00
Engine: 2.3 5 cylinder turbo
Transmission: Auto (all comments on this very welcomed!)
Thanks in advance for any help,
Neil

end of line engine, that has to be one of the last of 2.2 turbos. The engine is well documented.
virtually identical powerplant in the S2/S4 of the era with the 2.2 as well. although there was an odd stint of V8 S4/S6's in that shape as well.
The engine code differs IIRC the routing for the turbo is slightly different as the engine bay is bigger.
Cant quite recall the paint/rust warranty on that age, its 10/12 years so you will either be nearing it soon or just past.
I also think they have the UFO brakes as well.

No UFO brakes on the S6, they have big disks off the A8. Most of the last year of S6 were auto unfortunately.
It'll need a cambelt at 80k if it hasn't had one alrady.
My S4 (pretty much the same car) had problems with turbo hoses, they're getting old and the rubber perishes. They're not cheap, a full set will set you back nearly £200 and a bad split will stop the car running.
Expect low 20s MPG, i never got more than 19. Don't buy a tuned one unless it's been done properly by MTM or at a push MRC. There are a lot of badly tweaked S4/6s out there. If the cap from the top of the wastegate (covering an allen head screw) is missing then i'd walk away as adjusting this is the most common tuning bodge.

This one by any chance?

Looks like a good clean car, at that milage you shouldn't have any problems with the engine or gearbox. Check it's making full boost ( trip computer on instrument binicle has a boost function ) should be 1.1bar I think, although it will read 2.1bar as it read atmospheric pressure aswell. Any misfires could be caused by a boost leak or a coil pack on it's way out. Knocking from suspension could get expensive as there are a lot of bushes and they are not cheap.
I had a C4 S4 for a couple of years with 176K on and it was very reliable, heavy on gas though even when driven like a nun, and they really need Super unleaded to go well.
Try asking on www.s2forum.com , plenty of people on there run S4 and S6's
