Hi

Wondering if one of you knowledgeable folk can advise... when setting off on my passat (2001 Y, tdi 130) there is a judder, if i set off with high revs then it is ok...

can anhyone advise what this could be? I have been advised the clutch and flywheel may need to be replaced, but want to see if it could be anything else...

Thanks in advance

If it's done a few miles and it's a dual mass flywheel it's probably that.

I have this on my Lupo, also heard it shares some clutch parts with some 2.0 TDis.

Been quoted 280 inc an LUK clutch, which seems really good!

Its buqqered I am afraid. Mine started going at 20K and was shot by 30K. Lease company picked up the tab that time, but the replacements going the same way.

It's a VW achilles heel.

In fact the reason I came on here today was to ask if tame technician, or other Audi mechanic, can advise if the current A4 & A6 170TDi's have a heavier clutch and/or have overcome this problem. Or if anyone knows if it afflicts BMW 520d. These are my possibles for the replacement car but I really don't want the same issues again. I am also advised its a modern problem with light weight dual mass flywheels from several makers.

In my opinion there are several things that you need to do to avoid this issue with the VW clutch:-

Never "dump start" on the the clutch - there is enough torque to provide enough heat to start the process of death in one go.

Never maintain hard acceleration as you change gear - mesh just slightly off rev and the same effect is possible.

Don't tow a caravan or heavy trailer - however slow you manouvre one (on the flat even), you can smoke the clutch because the idle speed in first gear is too high to fully engage first gear sometimes.

Yes I have a caravan, but the first clutch went before we even had a tow bar - I think down to a single over-spirited get away. The 2nd started to go after a single hll start on a no more than 1:12 hill with the caravan.

Yo might question my skill, but if it means anything, I am a member of the IAM and in 25 years of driving, this is the only car I have ever had clutch problems with - and two of those cars I drove to well over 100K and they got a lot harder use as I was in my ealry 20's and drove with more vigour most of the time than I do these days.

Yeah, sounds like the DMF to me.
If your lucky like me and you know a VAG tech, purchase the DMF yourself (£170) and get the VAG tech to fit it. Save yourself a bloody fortune!!!
