have you tried driving with it whilst it says this? my old MFD2 did this first time, it said my position was not on a digitised map (I was on a street) but as soon as I moved it started working.

You definately need to get it to choose a route whilst driving. Your street may not be correctly mapped, some systems need to orientate themselves first, which happens when you move.

If that fails take it back

Input whilst stationary, but dont ask it to actually find the route until moving. You should only have to do this the first time

But how will he find it??!!!
If he stands in his garden and shouts "I want to buy a car!" they will find him yes

Hmmm, sounds like typical VW service to me, unfortunately you need to pursue it with the dealer and give them three attempts to fix it. If they dont you can go down the car rejection route which usually wakes them up.

I suspect they dont want to get a new unit so are trying the easy fixes first to see if that works, they probably have no better idea than you as to what is wrong with it.

Best policy is to remain calm, dont let it stress you and go the formal route three attempts and then abandon it on there forecourt.

Bet they fix it pretty damn quick then!

Makes no difference, in fact you would be worse off with finance if you stop paying the loan.

If you have to abondon it under the sale of goods act you can go for compensation to hire another car too and costs, it will rack up bloody quick which is why they will sort it.

Let us know how you get on

Ok car went into dealers to have new nav fitted and data installed, My dad dropped it off and picked it up for me as he works down the road. Well i got my car back this evening and is the nav working? NO

It appears all the dealer has done is loaded and supplied me with a data DVD, they have not fitted the new unit. This appears to have had some effect in that the HDD now seems to be working again. The nav however still wont give me directions.

When i ask it to calculate a route it sayd "NO ROUTE RECCOMENDATIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THIS DESTINATION" and when i press the "i" button go get it to repeat it says "THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM IS INACTIVE"

Well i rang the stealers to discuss the issue and was told a new unit was not fitted as there was no fault (the opposite to what i was told last week) and that the unit had been tested and worked fine. I asked if they had actually driven the car and tried to get directions to a destination i was told "probably not". Now by the time i rang up all of the service staff had gone home and i couldnt speak to the actuall person who did the work (or lack thereof). I await a call back tomorrow!

Now this is p155ing me off a bit as when i visited the stealer last week i was told it definetly needed a new unit, now someone has decided it doesnt, but i am still left witha £1200 option that doesnt bloody work !!!!!! arrrrgggghhhhhhh

My Audi A6 system certainly needs the disc inthe drive the whole time, tyhe DVD drive is mounted in a rack in the boot.

I think they do need the disc to access the database as I dont think it can hold the whole disc in memory, when they update the disc then you can simply swap it over with the updated roads etc...

Is there a setting somewhere that points the nav to look at the hard drive rather than the disc? It may not know it is loaded on to the HDD and is looking for the disc always?

But sounds like you need to try maybe another VW dealer who knows a bit about it...

Thats always the problem with buying a new VW, the dealers!

Ring up another dealer and ask if the disc needs to be loaded for the satnav to work.

Alternativly try some of the VW specific sites.
