Mk 2 Golf GTI- Worth a punt?
Discussion
I've been looking for an 80's hot hatch for a while and haven't really found what I'm looking for yet. I was after a car that hadn't been modified/ruined but needed a little bit of cosmetic work to make it good. A Mk2 Golf GTI 8v on a J plate has been offered to me for £800, its all original with about 140k on the clock, apparently the colour is rare (blue-balck?) and it has the 'rainbow' interior. I'm going to go and have a look at it in a week or so and am taking a knowlegeable Golf loving mate with me, is there anything to look out for specific to the Mk2 GTI that I might otherwise turn a blind eye to if I get caught up in the moment?

Someone I sure will give you more specific advice, but I used to own a VW Vento 2.0 8v same engine, and the engines are really good, had mine upto 140k when I sold it and last I heard it was nearing 190k.
Make sure the engine has had regular oil changes at that mileage, (Every 10k Miles) with half decent oil).
Nothin ever went wrong with mine so do the usual car checks and check the service history. If it has been regularly serviced and drives well it should be good.
Everything should still feel fairly tight even at that mileage if it has been cared for.

Rust can be an issue but normally its just cosmetic around windscreen, fuel filler cap, bottom of doors.
Have a good look underneath if you can for rust, oil leaks etc..
Synchro on 2nd gear is a known weakness but vague gear change can be just worn linkage which is easy fix.
Mine smoked on start up but disappeared when on the go, valve seals were going but it wasn't worth the expense of renewing them.
Condition and evidence of it being well looked after is all important.
A good sign is matching tyres and lots of receipts.

Thanks for the information, I'm off to see it soon. Were there any good/bad run-out specs, this car is on a J plate, so I assume it'll be one of the last mk2s, should it have things like electric windows as I know it has power steering (not sure if this was an option) and the ranbow fabric (like the 16v ones?).

It should have leccy windows but that may not be a guarantee, the J plate's are all a bit different as they used some bits from the corrado on them, the colour sounds like helios blue which I had and looked awesome just make sure if it has been sprayed that they have done it well.
The only other thing to look for IMO is things like the electrics in particular the fuse box under the dash on the right hand side, trying going down some bumpy roads to make sure the connectsions and board are good as mine had a habit of cutting out due to a dodgy fuse board, normally at speed when braking heavily GULP !!!.
