when the search was working ( biggrin ) i found posts of golf owners saying it does avg of mid 20's - what i'm wondering is on say a longer run of steady 80 on the motorway for a couple of hundred miles, what sort of mpg, can it creap over 30?

You might nudge 30 if you set the cruise at a little over 70mph (with the air-con off), but a steady 80mph is quite likely to be under 30mpg.

That said, I rarely have the computer set to display fuel economy, but I don't think I have ever seen 30mpg out of mine.. spin

On my daily commute which is mainly motorway / dual carriageway I average around 28mpg.

Other times it's low to mid 20's

On a my MkIV I typically get 25-28mpg on mixed driving, including some spirited moments. Once drove back to the office down the M1 like Mother teresa and saw 33.1 mpg. Needless to say I haven't bothered doing that again........

My MK IV R32 could do 32 mpg on a long steady 60 - 70 mph run on dual carrigeways but the long term average was 24 mpg with a bit of enthusiastic driving occasionally!

My A3 3.2 averages 27mpg.

Can get 30ish on a steady run.

People who tell you they are getting under 20 average are doing something wrong!

I've managed to get my 8P 3.2 down to 16.8mpg (actual not DIS/OBC) on a full tank of VPower....but more often usually between 19-23mpg (again actual not DIS/OBC on a full tanks of VPower).

It ain't always about lasting longer!

The R32 hasn't got long enough legs in 6th - hence you'll struggle to get 30. I managed it once, but only by driving like a saint.

My (much heavier) Audi Quattro 3.0 turbo will kick out 45mpg at 70 mph no problem... 'cos it has the gearing of a GT.
