Just had a look at a golf, next to the stereo attached above the glovebox was what looked to be a flat faced phone cradle about the same dimensions as the old nokia 6310.

it wasnt like a cradle to sit the phone in, there was a plastic cover towards the top which when removed there was some form of conector, though most phones this would be upside down confused

what is this kit, is it the basis for different phones and you need other parts?

Sounds like a THB Bury car kit.

You buy a cradle to match the phone and you're set to go.

(I have a couple of cradles here, so I can use my personal phone in my company car)

Hmmm, don't recognise that setup.

Any chance of getting a close-up of it?

Ahhhh, you're out of luck, then.

However, if the car has the Bluetooth kit, then you can connect via Bluetooth.
