i have aquired a 1994 audi coupe 2.0 16v, problem is the engine sounds like i emptied my full tool box into it! i was wondering if anyone has put the 1.8t ngine in out of an a4 and could give me a few hints?? i.e. would i use the a4 gearbox and if there was any minefields to steer clear of?? cheers

Hmmmmm, could be a minefeild.

I'd start by buying an early complete A4/A6 1.8t so you have all of the parts and wiring and should have to buy very little else. they are pretty cheap to buy now.

could be done but a lot of considerations... have a look on audifans.net a fair few conversions on B3/B4 cars. The later cars ignition and dashes all need to be mated. There is from memory a kit for the 1.8T for older cars, i know its popular with the mk1/2 golfs.

Why not just put a 2.2 turbo from the same era S2/RS2 in there?

Qpeng - can make you a custom wiring loom and Immobaliser delete which would allow you to either install the engine and run it on factory management and have it working with your existing instruments or give you the option to run stand alone management.

their website also has lots of details on how the conversion is done.

just going back a bit on the existing 2.0 16v (ACE?) engine, watch its not tappets they are be really noisy, a flush and some good oil can get them sounding reasonable again. Also a tweakable engine, seen one in a FWD coupe before which very heavily modified, throttle bodied, custom tubular manifold, megasquirt etc.

Age old one, how deep are you pockets?

In a 1994 car it is likely he has the 6A bubble block 2.0.

ISTOO - very good point, there is no need to write off the 16v lump just yet. I know that Audis had very soft cams in them from the factory which restricted power to 136hp... changing the inlet cam for a 2.0 ABF inlet of a aftermarket one with longer duration an higher lift will give good gains. It is very possible to extract 170hp out of a 6a with minimal mods but once you want to go higher than 185 you need DEEP pockets.

How about a home brew turbo kit for a 16, still popular in Germany an the US where there are plenty of off the shelf parts to aid the conversion. I think im right in saying a fair amount of S2 parts can be used in the swap.

RS4 engine swap would be beasty...

i think its the bottom end shells that are making the noise, sounds like a rather unhealthy grinding!! if i was to fettle the 2.0 16v, what would be the best upgrades??
