Morning Gentlemen and ladies of the VW fraternity,

I have a MK4 GT TDI 130 PD and I am looking as to which would be better for me to do to increase my power?? I have been told on both sides that just a ECU remap would do the job but also have had advice on chipping it?

Can you, my fellow PHers assist in my pondering and suggest which would be 1)easier 2)cost effective and 3)preferred choice and also any ideas on companies local to east mids/west mids area??

Many thanks in advance

funny you should mention this. I've been having the same thoughts re my 140hp mk5. And would a remap or chip have to be declared to insurance?
Will be watching replies with interest but unfortunately I have nothing helpful to add.

It does if you want your car to remain insured.

You must tell insurance, and dont think they wont find out if something goes wrong coz they can check the car for these sorts of things...

Just as a marker, it is worth getting a quote for a chip as confused etc treat it as a standard mod and it might not be much more, my 130tdi Skoda which I no longer have cost and extra £40 ish for the remap...

The remap was with Revo and I recommend it, very easy put the car over 160bhp and no problems whatsoever. You can get custom remaps etc, but depends if you want to set the car up that sort of thing. The revo is just 15mins and its done.

Makes a big difference to the 130bhp tdi and makes it smoother and more progressive.

Chipping and remapping are basically the same thing - chipping involves replacement of the engine map chip with a new remapped chip - remapping just changes the map that's on the existing chip. Dependant on the age and ECU type of your car only one should work, so your choice is not either, or, it's simply do you add a tuning box or change the map.

Ultimately remaps are better than tuning boxes as they change the engine fueling and boost parameters in a more comprehensive manner - the boxes simply up the fueling.

Yes, definitely tell your insurance - the consequences of an uninsured accident don't bear thinking about.

I have the same engine in my Bora and have had a generic remap to 170bhp/290lbs ft (from 130/228) - keep it under 300lbft as that's all the standard clutch can take. It could have been 190/290, but the tuner recommended I went for less as my engine had done 105k at the time.

IMO unless you have other mods such as different intercooler, you don't need to waste 100s on a bespoke map - mine cost me 150 quid - I had to drive to Hemel to do it but at the same time he did my autolocking, miles to empty on the clock, etc.

If you want the details let me know.

Oh, and on the 1.9PD the only way you can tell if the ECU has been flashed is to download the map or put it on a rolling road - it doesn't have an increment counter to flag up an ECU flash.

You should go on UKMKIVs, a wealth of info on there.

I'd seriously recommend these guys:

http://www.jabbasport.com/

They are very good on forced induction engines & have done plenty on 1.9l VAG engines.

They fitted my Milltek exhaust, brake upgrade & air induction kit to my old R32.

Is this so you can drive uninsured?

No - it's a simple observation - important if you buy a car that feels faster than it should.

Yes, and the insurance companies can check the map by downloading it should they be inclined or suspicious of something.

There are so many car on the roads with remaps now that insurance companies are far more likely to check to see if there has been an undeclared modification.

Why pay a few hundred quid for insurance then have the policy made null & void for not declaring a modification that would only add 40 - 80 quid to the premuim??
