GF has a 1999 Golf with only a radio/tape player. I'd like to listen to a CD to take my mind off her driving.

I've seen a VW stand alone single cd unit on ebay which seems to fit under or over the tape player in the dashboard.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volkswagen-single-CD-player-...

Will this fit her car, would it be fairly simple to do and will it really NOT need a security code?

Thanks for your help.

Mate, if you can, hang out for the VW multichanger, fits in same place but is 6-cd. I fitted a single to my mk 4 bora and wished I'd gone for the multi.

Dead easy to fit though - the CD player should come with removal keys if you don't still have them. Radio might need a recode after as you do take the power out of it to wire the CD blocks in.

Oh, and no, the CD itself doesn't need a code, but the radio might.

And aye, it just fits where you probably have a little cubby hole now.

CD Player won't need a security code.

I think it only works with the Gamma and Beta radios in a MK4 Golf, so check this is what your GFs has.

Be very careful when buying dash cd players from the bay, you need to make sure you buy one that is original dash mount and not and armrest mount one.

Easy way to tell as they look identical from the front is the plug on the back of the cd player unit

Green/Blue/Yellow plug = dash
Black = Armrest

Its nigh on impossible to fit an armrest player into the dash as even though it physically fits, the connecting cable you need is a good few meters long as its designed to reach the armrest area. No cable is needed for the dash player as the multi coloured plug plugs straight into the radio

You will also need an additional lead for the illumination to work, these are £13 from dealers or available from ebay also.

The Golf MK4 never had armrest mounted cd-changers, that was the MK5 and probably the MK6 too.

Excellent! Top work!

It seems she has a Gamma radio/tape and the cd player I'm bidding on has the yellow/blue/green plug so it's the right one. I'll stick with the single cd as a multi would only confuse her wink

Also I'll make sure she has the radio code for her unit when she gets it fitted.

Thanks for all your help.

quite correct, but people will buy ones from ebay that say "vw dash cd player" and are actually from a mk5 golf/touran etc armrest

mk6 has cd built into its radio as standard

Aye, I got mine from ebay that specified mk 4 gamma and came in the VW box, probably ex-stock - looks exactly the same as the one pictured tho.
