My 2002 B5.5 Passat refuses to open with the remote unless I'm about 3 feet away. I've replaced the battery but the range is just as bad. I've read that repeated pressing of the keyfob when out of range de-synchronises the keyfob but has this got anything to do with it?

Have you tried the keyfob under you chin trick. You might get a greater range...to six feet perhaps?

Does the range improve even more if you have a double chin?

i think there are two sensors... Find somebody with VAG-COM to plug it in, that will tell you if their is a fault with the car inself.

I had to buy a remote fob for my golf, 53 plate, last week for this exact same problem.
Friend who is an auto electrician/auto lock smith has a tool that measure signal strength of remotes. Even with a new battery, the old fob wouldn't work more than a foot away.

I have and it improves range from 3 feet to about 10 feet. Not a long term solution though I feel. I've plugged the car into VAGCOM and no fault codes appear whatsoever. I have another remote which needs programming so I'll test that once I've paid my local key place the £15 or so they claim it'll cost.

Thanks all!
