Hi Sarah,
A few pointers for you.
Work out what your budget is.For a reasonably decent one you need to spend at least £6k
Coupe or Roadster?( I have a 225 Roadster which is great when it is not raining). Expect to pay more for a good Roadster.
What ever you choose - make sure it has had the following:
All re-call work for rear suspension / rear spoiler mods( Early models had a tendency to crash at high speed)
If its highish mileage ( +60k) - ensure it has had cambelt / water pump done.
Service History is a good thing - Haldex 4WD system needs to be looked after.A car with a good service history is probably a must.
Car Tax - check what the threshhold is for new tax bracket ( I think after mid 2001 they go into the ~ £420 a year for tax) HIGHWAY ROBBERY !!!!!!
Look at loads - drive a good few - there are loads out there - so be fussy.
Drive a hard bargain - if you go to a dealer - insist on 12 months MOT and a service as a minimum.
The 225 is the best model to have - usually comes with Xenons / Leather / Bose Concert Sound etc.
I love my roadster - awesome drive - wind in the hair is great.
Happy to give you more advice if you need it.

Out of the Mk 1 Range, the best steer by some margin is said to be the 237 bhp limited edition TT Sport model - these are recognisable by the black roof and pillar, no rear seat (not that it was of any use to begin with!) and fixed back racing buckets up front). It's a fair bit lighter than the standard Quattro model which is always good. Fallen Angel on this site used to have one - she'd be the one to give a bit more of a detailed account.
225 is good and quick ish, plus if you want to make it go faster it is easier to tune to bigger power say 300bhp.
The V6 is 250bhp and not much if any quicker, but sounds nicer and is a V6. If you want to raise the power on the V6 it is going to be very expensive to get any serious gains. (No turbo to fiddle with)
The last of the MK1 TTs were labelled Sport and had the 1.8 but 240bhp. That is probably the best depending on budget. Just be careful you dont get one that the dealer says is a sport and isnt!
As for fuel economy, the V6 will sap more fuel but if probably not a lot in it unless you drive like a granny.
Personnaly I would go for the V6, as I like the noise, but if you are really interested in speed get the 225 or 240.
Dont worry about the tax, this isnt true and is a myth, cars in 2006 get the £405 tax band, the TT will be slightly more for a later one, £215 vs £190 (2001 to 2006)
Make sure the car has full proper history with regular oil changes. Look for brakes, tyres cambelt at 60k etc.

3.2 V6 for me. The V6 is 250bhp and not much if any quicker, but sounds nicer and is a V6. If you want to raise the power on the V6 it is going to be very expensive to get any serious gains. (No turbo to fiddle with)

However, can confirm that should it be driven out of Auto the fuel seems to disappear faster than you would hope...wouldn't change a thing.
Have loved every second of the DSG - still not tired of playing with the flaps.
Thanks for all the info and help. I agree the 3.2 may be thirsty, but the sound kinda out weighs it for me. Got back from Oz and loved all the V6 and V8s over there!!!
I noticed there are alot of TTs for sale and had seen the sport models, so trying to get a good one at a decent price! Alot of people have said they are 'hairdressers' cars but to me it could be loads of fun, with a good sound.
Thanks for the advice and when I get him i'll post some pics.
cheers
Sarah

3.2 seems the popular choice...

i was never a fan of the MK1's but had a run in one of these last weekend, much more a drivers car than the others. If i was going for a mk1 it would be this one. Plus with he black roof it looks a lot nicer a well! mk2's too new for me, but the whole line up isnt bad to be fair. but if money was no object wait for a TTRS!
