A3 TDI 2.0/1.9 Why?
Discussion
The 1.9 is a very useful (£1700-3000+ depending on trim) chunk cheaper. The 1.9 is by no means a bad engine, it's well proven and easy to maintain and tune, and to a lot of people who just want an audi but need a diesel the cheapest model in the range will be more than sufficient. Yes, the 2.0 seems to supercede it, but the 1.9 is just so cheap that a lot of people will struggle to justify the price difference when the most important things by far are list price and economy (plus the badge of course, otherwise they'd buy Skodas)
There is quite a big difference, the actual engine capacity means nothing. The 1.9 is designed to be a low power (105) diesel alternative to the 1.6, wheras the 2.0 TDI (140) is a diesel alternative to teh 1.8T/ 2.0 FSI and the top dog 2.0 TDI (170) is a diesel alernative to the 2.0 TFSI. However they wll soon be replacing the 1.9 with an all new 1.6 TDI of the same bhp, which should be very good

Isn't there now a low power version of the 2.0TDI with 110bhp?
Which makes the 1.6TDI seem a bit pointless.
No, because the 2.0 TDI 110 was simply a stop-gap engine. It was created because the 1.6 TDI wasn't ready in time to be a launch engine for the MKVI Golf, and obvisouley it is this sized engine that makes up the bulk of the sales. If you look at the latest price list you will see the 2.0 110 has been deleted from the lineup and the 1.6 105 has taken its place.Which makes the 1.6TDI seem a bit pointless.

Simple fact is they're still making the engine by the truck load for Skodas and the platform was already set-up to take it... It's a perfect way for Audi to get some idiot badge snobs into thy're cars as they're much cheaper than the 2.0 as already mentioned.
Bit of a sweeping generalisation that isnt it
?Remember the 1.4T (which is a much better engine than the ancient 1.9) and the 1.6 are both available for less money than the 1.9

i have the crappy noisy 1.9tdi tractor engine in mine and i love it - not so because i'm a 'badge snob' infact i think audi is a poor badge compared to some but for company car tax and mpg reasons really.
I couldn't care less if the 2.0 is more refined or quieter and I think a few people will feel the same.
The car just gets thrashed to bits and left in car parks etc - i think a few company car users will feel the same if they just need a cheapish box to be karted around
some companies don't have skoda etc as an option!
Ditto, my alternatives were Mondeo, Laguna, Scenic, Focus, 1 series. TBH I don't think there much in it for tax but every little counts.I couldn't care less if the 2.0 is more refined or quieter and I think a few people will feel the same.
