Golf 4motion problems (Suspension and Paint)
Discussion
Hi, had a few problems with my wife's Golf 4motion (2002). Any body else had the same issues?
1 - the upper nearside suspension arm was found to be broken mid 2008 - it was spotted on the MOT but looked to have been broken for a long time. the car drove perfectly - no issues, although she only does about 3000~4000 miles a year.
1 - A - the suspension arm was replaced at VW ( i was hoping they would look at it under warranty as it had been broken a long time, and they'd done all the servicing - but no such luck. they it was acceptable for it to fail after up to 6 years and 50k miles.
The replacement (fitted in Oct 2008) lasted about 6 months and 2000 miles before we noticed it was broken again (the car was at Kwikfit for tyres). VW replaced it again, this time FOC but with no real explanation.
XXX - Now just noticed this weekend that the 4 bolts that fasten main thick suspension arm / axle to the body are loose, with the car in the air and the weight taken off the axle these bolts could be turn with my finger tips. IS THIS right? they are loose on the side where the upper suspension are has been replaced twice!! - but doesn't appear to be loose on the other side.
2 - problems with the paint - around the boot lid handle the paint was bubbling, its as if there was a reaction between the metal of the handle surround and the tailgate. this had been mentioned at numerous services but they never got round to it, and now as the VW garage has changed hands its not under warranty (although they did manage to chip the paint off some of the bits where it was bubbling and now there is a patch of rust - not bubbling paint).
3 - the wheels, they bubbling too, again mentioned but not sorted.
Has anybody else had the same issues?
thanks Simon.

Paint around boot handle should be covered under the paint warranty. Had mine done and it needs doing again (53 plate). Is it just the handle or the boot as well. First attempt mine was just the handle but when they when to remove it and replace with a pre-painted one it took paint from the boot with it. Anyhow push them to fix it - it is a common problem.3 - the wheels, they bubbling too, again mentioned but not sorted.

Wheels my R32 Aristos were replaced under warranty after around 2.5yrs but it is one of those grey areas if they are not chipped/scuffed and you could argue that it is covered under the same paint warranty go for it. However I recently had mine refurbed powdercoated at Lepsons in Swindon.
